Excellent. So far this thread has been embraced by only one other person besides the author! Ah well. Here's the most complex assignment I've done so far this quarter - I'm quite proud of myself. :D

Caroline -------
English 480

(Vocabulary and use in a sentence of your own wording to explain author's point):

Vatic: Of or characteristic of a prophet; oracular. Writing, in its immediate incontestability, has an almost vatic quality, like oral prophecies or spoken proverbs.
Contumacious: Obstinately disobedient or rebellious; insubordinate. Texts are contumacious in that even after disputing them, they say the same thing.
A Fortiori: For a still stronger reason; all the more. Writing was first villainized as something which weakens the mind, and the technology of print a fortiori.
Epistemology: The branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, its presuppositions and foundations, and its extent and validity. Plato’s epistemology was flawed in the concern for writing – to make his objections against writing effective, he had to write them down!
Involution: A) Intricacy; complexity. B) Something, such as a long grammatical construction, that is intricate or complex. Ong is basically saying that external tools (writing) have become interiorized, part of the thought process, an involute conclusion.
Writing: To form letters and words, or symbols, on a surface. We have interiorized writing in a way that earlier peoples, people at the beginning of the paradigm shift from orality to literacy, had not.
Pictograph, Pictogram: A picture representing a word or idea; a hieroglyph. Chinese characters are pictograms. Alphabet letters are phonograms – they represent the idea of different phonemes.
Ideograph, Ideogram: A character or symbol representing an idea or a thing without expressing the pronunciation of a particular word or words for it. Humans were using ideograms long before the development of true writing. Ideograms are the precursor to writing, but like pictograms, they must be explained by convention, or they are without meaning.
Syllabary: A set of written characters for a language, each character representing a syllable. Early Semitic syllabaries, devoid of vowel phonograms, are thought to have less potential for application than alphabets with vowel phonograms.

[Thought processes grow out of powers structured by the technology of writing].

Written works are separate from the author, in a way that speech is never separated from the speaker. Text cannot be “directly questioned or contested” (77) as speech can. Ong calls this context-free language or autonomous discourse. The immediate incontestability of writing has no equivalent in the oral culture except for “fixed ritual formulas [and] vatic sayings and prophecies” (79). Therefore, the written word has this same solemn quality.

Writing is a technology, even if it is so interiorized that we no longer see it as such. It involves tools. It is not innate, it was invented. Yet text so permeates our lives that we cease to see the pen as anything less than a natural extension of our own body. To clear one’s mind completely of literate perceptions of words is quite impossible without meditation. Our consciousness now operates within the sphere of literacy. Ong points out that artificiality is natural to humans. “Shaping a tool to oneself, learning a technical skill, is hardly dehumanizing” (82).

Humans have been around for 50,000 years. The earliest forms of writing were developed 5500 years ago. This means we’ve only been utilizing literacy for a little over 10% of our chronological existence. This is not to say there was not a long tradition of ideogram usage leading up to the development of the “encoded visible markings” which have taken our words and thoughts from the realm of the oral/aural and transformed them into visually apprehended phenomena*. The invention and incorporation of pictograms and phonograms into language fundamentally expanded our thought processes.

A hybrid system of writing “mixes two or more principles” such as phonograms and pictograms, as in the case of Korean writing. English is a hybrid system to the extent that some words, like representations for numbers (1,2,3, etc.) or the @ symbol, are more characteristic of pictograms than phonograms. Ong seems to support the idea that Korean is a much more difficult language to become literate in than English because of its heavy mixture of principles.

*Does not the ability to compose a such a complex sentence with big words make me special?

photosynthesis (foh-toh-sin'-thuh-sis) the conversion of light energy to chemical energy;water, carbon dioxide, and chlorophyll are all essential to the process, which ultimately produces carbohydrate, with oxygen being released as a by-product  does this help

here is a paper i receaved 50/50 on hope you enjoy
The Emerald Ash Borer
Order: Coleoptera (= beetles)
Family: Buprestidae (= metallic wood borers)
Genus: Agrilus
Species: planipennis

The Distribution of the emerald ash bore has decimated ash tree population in Thirteen counties of Michigan, Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Shiawassee, Washtenaw and Wayne. Based on the age of trees affected, experts believe the beetle has been in the Detroit area for as long as five years or more. It appears that the emerald ash borer initiates attack high on the tree trunk and then spreads both upward to higher branches and downward to lower portions of the trunk, and even to the ground-line and along exposed buttress roots., 6 million trees in six counties of the area are estimated to be infested or dead.

little to no information is known of The Life cycle of the emerald ash borer from its native country or types of management for the insect. What is known is that, the adult borer is dark metallic green in color, one-half-inch in length and one-sixteenth-inch wide, and is 100 percent fatal to ash trees. Emerald ash borer completes one generation per year. Eggs are laid from late May to early August. They are deposited along the trunk and lower portions of major branches, inside bark layers, and crevices. Eggs hatch in one week. larvae tunnel through to the cambial region and feed on the inner bark and outer sapwood from June to October. Larval galleries are typically S-shaped. Most overwinter as fully-grown larvae in pupal cells constructed in the outer sapwood or in the outer bark. After pupae transform into adults, it takes 1 to 2 weeks before the new adults chew their way out of the tree. Adult emergence holes are D-shaped and about 3-4 mm in width. Adults are active from late May to early August. They eat ash foliage throughout their life. Flight usually begins soon after emergence. Adult males typically live 2 weeks and females 3 weeks. Females lay 68-90 eggs in their lifetime

The borer's host range is limited to species of ash trees, Emerald Ash Borer does not attack mountain ash, which is not related to the white, black, or green ash trees. To monitor seasonal development of the emerald ash borer, several infested ash trees are felled every two weeks. The trunk of each tree is then debarked and the insects are removed, counted, and life stage determined. The numbers and life stages of ash borers encountered are being used to monitor seasonal development. In China, three species of ash (Fraxinus) are the only tree species reported as host trees, while in Korea, EAB also attacks a species of elm (Ulmus davidiana var. japonica), and in Japan it is reported to infest ash, elm, walnut (Juglans mandshurica) and wingnut (Pterocarya rhoifoliain North America, emerald ash borer has been found to successfully reproduce only in species of ash.
Controls are being used to try and save the 700 million ash trees in Michigan, the state has acted aggressively by enacting a statewide quarantine to prevent further spread, and establishing a task force of experts to developed a comprehensive strategy to detect, contain and eradicate Emerald Ash Borer.
the strategy includes as follows
Enforce the quarantine, restricting movements of ash trees and materials.
Provide sanitation and disposal options.
Conduct surveys to ensure that the pest is not spreading, or to quickly detect additional infestations
Conduct research into the pest's biology and identify potential control options
Ensure community and homeowner education
Facilitating tree restoration/replacement wherever possible.
Currently, cutting down and chipping infested trees is the only known means to kill this insect. In early June ash trees were treated with foliar cover sprays including Sevin, Orthene, Tempo and Talstar. In early July, half of the treated trees received a second cover spray. Leaf and twig samples were collected from all treated trees in June and July. Adult emerald ash beetles were caged on the foliage in the laboratory to assess leaf feeding and mortality. Adult mortality was found to be very high (up to 100%) on foliage from trees that were treated with Bidrin or the foliar cover spray.

Like the bronze birch borer the emerald ash borer has a two year life cycle. both adult borers emerge, and chew their way out of the tree bark in June. The adults lay eggs near the top of the tree. The eggs hatch and the new larvae chew their way into and underneath the bark. The larvae fed and grow working their way up and down the trunk. The larvae over winter and pupate in the spring. The pupa mature into adults and the cycle is repeated. There are many other borers that attack ash trees. Some of the more common ones include the redheaded ash borer, some clearwing borers, Carpenter Worm, etc. Most of these borers produce rounded exit holes of various sizes, depending on the insect.

In 1961, the first microbial insecticide was registered by the EPA for control of certain caterpillar pests in forestry and agriculture. This insecticide is made with the bacterium Bacillus thuringienis We found certain Bt-insecticides cause mortality of adult EAB. During the survey of Emerald Ash Borer natural enemies in Livonia, Michigan in 2002-03, various insect fungi were observed attacking emerald ash borer larvae. This led to the evaluation of the efficacy of BotaniGard®, a microbial insecticide formulated with the insect fungus, Beauveria bassiana var. GHA. BotaniGard was registered in 1997 for control of a variety of insect pests. BotaniGard is highly virulent against larval and adult emerald ash borers in the laboratory. Leaf sprays were least effective at controlling emerald ash borer adults, however, trunk sprays look promising. In one recent study, we found that 76% of the adults died of fungal infections after emerging from tree trunks sprayed with 20 quarts of BotaniGard per acre.

The Economic impact of the emerald ash borer. the metallic wood-boring beetle, was discovered in the summer of 2002. Tree death usually occurs in 3 years, but trees can die in 1 to 2 years when populations are at outbreak levels. Signs of attack are often not evident until the second year after attack when the crown begins to thin, and bark cracks and D-shaped exit holes and epicormic branches begin to appear. The insect kills ash trees by destroying the tree’s water and nutrient conducting vessels. If not contained the potential epidemic resulting from the emerald ash borer could rival Dutch Elm Disease, as the insect advances across North America. States which become infested could lose billions of dollars in forest products, and quarantines imposed by state and federal agencies may have dire consequences for plant and wood products industries. Because of their tolerance of adverse sites, ash trees have been planted extensively in urban/suburban landscape areas; their removal and replanting costs can be staggering.

I haven't wrote a paper in a long time thanks to oppapers.com (was that considered spamming a site? sorry  ) You gotta be careful to read the things through before you print them out and hand them in though. I had to do a report on Alice in Wonderland and someone snuck in halfway through it with "...and then the story got kind of weird, either that or I was way to stoned to understand anything.". I didn't realize until the next day when she handed it back and made me redo it. >=\

wow i opened this post with eager eyes, i thought i'd at least see 1 original fiction story or sumin. just loadsa borin history papers. (the only history papers i have are in my ash tray) still tho some were pretty good :P

heres a short story i did back in the day for an english class. im amazed at how camp it is actualy, but it is a half decent story i guess. just camp (or gay for all u politicaly correct types):

By David Cashmore

Smartie the dolphin.

Smartie was reluctant to come out of his ‘living pool’ as always, as the great showman lifted the steel gate. “C’mon you stupid fish! We got a show starting soon, and I’m not going to be made late by no brainless extra!”
If there was anything in the world that would get Smartie ready for the show, it was definitely not that. For his entire career Smartie had been made fun of. He wasn’t ever taken seriously; everything down to his name had been made into a joke. Take Flipper on the other hand, his older brother: he was loved, he was named after another well loved dolphin, was big and strong and always held the attention of the crowd. And then there was Smartie. Ignored by everyone, named so because he was the ‘last Smartie in the pack’, was smaller and younger than Flipper, and was never in the spotlight of the shows. He had never been given a chance to prove himself, and was not going out again to be humiliated by the laughing crowds. “Fine then you dim-witted dolphin, just stay there, we wont miss you. But you’re going to have to watch Flipper eat your dinner!” As he said this he walked over to flippers living quarters, a much bigger tank, of course. “C’mon champ.” He said, and no sooner had he opened the gate than had a glimmer of silver perfection shot out from beneath him. He stood in awe watching the shimmer of blue light racing toward the increasing tide of guests. Following this a sense of pride, knowing that he had raised this animal to be such a faultless piece of beauty, sent a smile across his darkly tanned face. Smartie had to watch this same sense of pride run across his master’s face every time Flipper left his pen. When Smartie left his pen, his trainers face could not even be seen, as he was sure to be looking in Flippers direction. Smartie had soon learned not to hope for his master’s affection, and was almost as deeply annoyed with him, as the trainer was with Smartie.
But today was going to be different. Smartie declared to himself that he would steal the show away from Flipper, the crowd would cheer him, and his master would look upon him with the same pride that he had for Flipper. With a graceful flick of his tale, Smartie shot out of his pen as fast as he could, and raced to the front of the crowds of people, skimming across the surface of the water in much the same way that he had seen Flipper do. Trying to perfect his speed above the water, he only just skimmed over the top of Flipper, who was sitting idol in the middle of the enclosure and gave a brief squeal to show his disapproval of this stunt. The crowd however, cheered Smartie’s actions and a type of flashing could be seen coming from above the water, the type he only saw when Flipper performed a big stunt. Taking this as a sign of approval, Smartie raced around the parameter of the tank squeaking merrily at his new best friends. The trainer gazed at the dolphin with a slightly confused look, then shrugged it off and walked over to his props. After the crowd got board of Smartie racing around, he went and hovered behind Flipper, ready to mimic his moves. As the show got started 3 thuds and then a roaring noise from the crowd could be heard. Ready to pounce Smartie looked on at Flipper who was bobbing motionlessly. So Smartie took this as a sign that he should do the same, and continued to wait by Flipper. Another 3 thuds followed and finally a loud roar from the crowd of people was heard again. But still Flipper stood motionless in the water. Smartie decided to swim around and investigate these noises, which had puzzled him, and as he got to the front of the crowd another 3 knocks followed. But this time when the crowd made its almighty roar Flipper swam to the surface, and sent a red ball hurtling towards the sky.
Unknown to Smartie, a red ball had been placed above his head, and Flipper had been waiting for Smartie to move so that he could get to the ball and perform his trick, like he had done many times before. As Smartie watched Flipper crash back into the water accompanied by a storm of bright flashes, he felt a sense of un-belonging sink into his heart, right into the place it had rested in many times before. So he stayed in his favourite place, a shadow beside the fence, and felt a little better in his spot of false security, away from the prying eyes of Flippers audience. Here he stayed and watched Flipper perform stunt after stunt. Each time he did, a roar and a sea of flashes followed even more elaborate and unbearable than the last. Finally it was time for Flippers last stunt. He would swim up to 3 different rings and catch each one on his nose, then bring it back to the trainer.
Just at that moment Smartie felt a little girls gaze upon him. It was a look of sheer awe, and was like the appreciation of somebody witnessing the most beautiful thing in the world, much like his trainer looked at Flipper. This little girls stare had pierced the thick skin of loneliness, and a sea of courage flowed into his heart. At this Smartie shot out of his shadowy corner, and darted towards the first hoop. All that the crowd saw was a glimmer of blue shoot out of the water, and land on top of the hoop with such deadly accuracy it was uncannily similar to that of a kingfisher bird, hunting its prey. Smartie didn’t even notice the crowds amazed cheer for him this time, as his eyes were set on his next target. Again he leaped out of the water and landed on top of his prey. However, a bemused Flipper who had been stunned by all this was now aware that Smartie was trying to steal the show. His show! With haste Flipper darted for the last hoop and spiked it on his nose, just seconds before his rival got to it. While a shocked Smartie crashed into the water behind Flipper, confused at the loss of his ring, Flipper darted for the trainer to give him his present. At this Smartie felt his new found courage building up inside him, and explode into a bolt of blue thunder towards Flipper. There was no way he going to let Flipper have the crowd again, it was his turn now! A confident Flipper was soon angry to see Smartie appearing in front of him and make a diving lunge for his ring. Flipper yanked his head backwards with all his might, and the pathetically weak Smartie flew into the air tail first, still holding onto the last ring. He crashed into the water with awesome velocity and felt a great pain slash into the side of his body like a knife had just gutted him. He let go of the ring and admitted his defeat. At this Flipper, feeling like a god, tossed the ring in the air and caught it, showing to everyone that he was far superior to anything else.
This rubbed salt into the wounds of Smartie, and he once again felt the courage surging out of him and made one last dive for the ring. He could not out power Flipper however, so he knew he must outsmart him. He flew towards flippers tale and rubbed his nose against it, causing an annoyed Flipper to attack Smartie. Forgetting all about the ring, Flipper spun around to find empty water, as a laughing Smartie swam under the belly of the great beast to collect a ring just dropped by Flipper. Feeling a great feeling of shame, Flipper swam to an un-occupied corner of the tank, which was by the big fence and in a big shadow. He had to watch as a triumphant Smartie gave the 3 rings to the trainer, who had a big smile in his face, and a twinkle in his eye. “I knew you had something great inside you Smartie old lad, I knew it.”

disapointing ending? yes i know, my teacher didnt like the idea of smartie stabbing flipper with his nose :(
