EDIT: I read that 12 as a 13. Sorry for the Necromancy.

There are some great books on plant nutrients. It's a massively complex subject but the basics are your N.P.K values in the nutrients.
These can be found on the back of the packet/bottle.
These are N = Nitrogen, P = Phosphorous and K = Potassium.
For vegetative growth (Before pre-flowers and switching light schedule) you want higher Nitrogen-(N) than P or K.
For flowering you want Higher phosphorous (P) and lower nitrogen (N). Don't cut out Nitrogen completely or you risk nutrient lock-out, this is where your plant can't absorb nutrients. Too much Nitrogen during flowering and it will very likely grow too tall.

Two very important things to remember:

1. ONLY use nutrients that are safe for food. After all, you will be consuming your plant in one sense or another and you don't want to be poisoning yourself.

2. Mix you nutrients at a quarter strength to start with. Increase slowly, If you see nutrient burn you know you went too strong.
