SpRi7e's Tobacco Grow Log

Post by SpRi7e » Fri May 07, 2010 8:19 pm

Ok, I bought a pack of 200 'Virginia Gold #1' tobacco seeds, the #1 means it's a newer hybrid to the already ever so popular Virginia Gold seeds. What's better about them you ask? I have no clue, I haven't looked in to it, but if they come out with a newer hybrid it's usually going to be better.

I started germinating the seeds April 25th.. it took about 10 days or so for them to start sprouting. Today I did an early transplant (not a smart idea I know, but the soil I used turned out to be horrible) because they weren't growing as fast as they should have. They are nearly at bare minimal size to even consider transplanting, but I thought it was almost necessary and I only transplanted the biggest of them for safety precautions. I only currently have about 120 seeds that popped up and expecting roughly 40-50 of them all to actually make it in to the next phase. I'll get my first pictures that I did today on here, and keep it continually updated at least once a week.

This will be an interesting grow log to follow!

I worked one season on a tobacco farm during the harvest , but I don't know much about the actual planting of them

What kind of smokes do you puff on, Higher? I've smoked a few different brands over the years but have been smoking John Player's Standard king size for a few years now.

I used to smoke Player's Light or DuMaurier, but now I pretty much just smoke cheap contraband indian ciggies.

yeah, they take a real long time to start growing at the beginning. Soon they'll be able to start popping up once the weather is good. They can't even be outside on a decent day because they are so fragile to temperature change at this stage. They're supposed to be in the windowsill until they get bigger, and I have a CFL light on them constantly too.

Ok well I have some bad news for the tobacco plants. A lot of them have all died from the sun. They were only outside for a few hours and I guess the change was too drastic for them. There's about 7-10 left right now that are still barely cruising along. I think I'm going to have to buy more seeds and hope that my mistakes won't follow through. It's a real bummer that I never read anywhere how much a small amount of intense heat will kill these bad boys..

Here's the remaining plants I have left.. It seems that they needed to be hardened off to the weather for about 2 weeks before they can be left outside. Currently they've been chilling out in the shade for a few days so the sun doesn't kill them, but they've finally started to grow a decent amount faster than before. Here's some pics

Here's a few weeks after they got transplanted in the vegetable garden..

Since a lot of my plants died from the weather.. I bought 200 more that are currently just sprouting up from germination.
