How to stop smoking pot is a musing that many marijuana smokers wonder as they slowly come to terms with the fact that despite their attempts to put down Mary Jane they continue to pick it up and get wasted again and again.
This is a lot more common than most people think as marijuana addiction despite what some aggressive pro-marijuana people say can be addictive to many pot smokers. This is because there is no evidence to support marijuana as an addictive drug in the sense that cigarettes are addictive or heroin is addictive.
This form of addiction is called a physical addiction or physical dependency and is linked with strong withdrawal symptoms where the body has severe and painful physical cravings and reactions to a lack of the associated drug which can drive people to great lengths to continue usage.
Marijuana does not have a chemical in it that causes such things but despite this can be addictive like many other things such as gambling, sex, alcohol and so forth. This is called a psychological addiction and many people who have a physical dependency are also psychologically addicted as well.
What is a Psychological Addiction?
A psychological addiction is one where you feel the need to continue whatever habit you have formed though there is no psychical reason forcing you. We form habits all the time like this and some can be good like the person who may feel edgy and annoyed if they do not do their daily exercise.
As with other addiction like this such as gambling, alcohol, sex and pornography even there is a temporary change in brain chemistry however that is a start to an addiction. The reward centers of the brain are flooded with feel-good chemicals from most of these behaviors or substances making it seem like a good thing to do even if we know it is not. This once it becomes habitual can make a the normal mental state seem dull or inhibited when you first start to quit a psychological addiction but this does fade.
Is it hard to stop smoking pot?
While some people may just throw out statements such as "It just takes a little willpower" and other such comments that basically insinuate that you are weak quitting pot or any addiction can be very difficult or it can be easy depending on many personal factors.
There are many obstacles that can make this process difficult but never impossible:
Stress: This has to be one of the biggest factors that stops people from quitting smoking marijuana. Smoking weed has been a way that so many addicts deal with the everyday stress in their lives that when you cut that from the equation those stresses no matter how small come back with renewed vigor. Add to this the stress of quitting itself and dealing with withdrawals this becomes an issue where the addiction takes control and ends up with you lighting up again just to zone out. This can in turn make you feel guilty and depressed.
Anxiety: Linked to stress but can actually be a condition on its own. Anxiety and panic attacks can be crippling and some people smoke pot to ward these off. Others find that smoking too much cannabis actually causes panic and anxiety too so this is highly individual. A person with anxiety issues can find easy relief in marijuana which can make quiting difficult if the base problem is not solved.
Withdrawals: While many claim there are no withdrawals from stopping smoking pot many people have insisted that there is and have experienced them. Such symptoms include insomnia, irritability, vivid dreams, weight loss or even weight gain, nausea and others. There are usually mild compared to other drugs but can be enough coupled with other obstacles to pose a threat to your efforts to be weed free.
Social Consequence: Another little talked about issue for many marijuana smokers is the social setting they are in. If your friends or family or partner smoke then the social pressure to continue is very high. Many are afraid to say no or announce they are quitting in fear they will be ridiculed or isolated from their social structure. The fear of lack of support in their time of need can stop some people even starting and may cause others to relapse time and again as peer pressure takes a hold. This is highly undervalued as a major problem for many people wanting to quit.
Now while this sounds all doom and gloom the reality is that most people do not have all of these problems to deal with all at once but does give an idea of how and why it can be difficult. These reasons are usually not related to the effects of the drug itself but are related to how you deal with life after pot which can be hard without a plan and a good knowledge of your self and your motivations.
Is there a Best Way to Stop Smoking Pot?
Just as the causes for cravings and difficulties in quitting can be individual so can the ways in which you approach quitting.
There is no BEST way to quit unless you are talking about going cold turkey or gradually easing off weed. My personal opinion on this is that cold turkey is a better option for a number of reasons.
* Cutting down your intake can be hard to manage when you are high or being pressured to smoke more. Your plans to slow down can be easily changed and adjusted as you go. Some find themselves smoking more in fact.
* Once an addict always an addict. Most people who have been addicted to something will find that they must make a clean break from it. Cutting down to a reasonable level or quitting for a short period only tends to lead back to heavy smoking very quickly if the stresses are there.
* Quitting cold turkey gives you a single goal to achieve and something to put all your energies into.
I would only advice doing this however if you are READY to quit and have a plan to make sure you do.
Stop Smoking Pot Plans
There are many ways to achieve this but you need a few important things.
* A strong motivation to quit
* A clear understanding of the benefits of being off pot
* A clear understanding of why you became addicted
* An understanding of the fears that may be holding you back
As you can see it involves a certain level of introspcetion before you take the first step.
